Drum Lessons at The Xgroove
-
Start with the basics: how a drumbeat is built, how to read notation, and when to use a drum fill. We begin with 8th note rock beats — common grooves found in thousands of songs. You'll learn how to add bass drum variations and accent the beat with snare hits.
As you progress, you’ll explore rhythm through snare patterns that can double as drum fills. You’ll then add expressive tools like splashing the hi-hat — building on what you already know.
In the final stretch of beginner lessons, you’ll dip into intermediate-level ideas like 16th note bass and snare placements. This is when your groove starts to breathe.
-
Intermediate lessons begin with dynamics and ghost notes — subtle snare hits that bring depth to your groove. From there, you’ll learn to displace the backbeat for a funkier feel and control over groove timing.
You’ll explore rudiments like paradiddles and learn to apply them creatively in both beats and fills. Hi-hat stepping is introduced to give your groove a tight, responsive edge — and it’s your first step into 4-way coordination.
As your independence grows, you’ll start learning double bass concepts — using your snare rhythm vocabulary to create exciting, heavy grooves with your feet.
-
At the advanced level, you’ll push your coordination through ostinato-based styles like Samba and Baiao — where your feet play looping patterns while your hands create layered rhythms.
You’ll use rudiments around the kit to shape fills and groove ideas, developing phrasing between the hi-hat, snare, and toms. Your double bass playing evolves with advanced rudiment-based foot patterns like 5- and 6-stroke rolls that groove instead of just blast.
At the top end of this journey, you'll start experimenting with three- and four-pedal coordination, unlocking creative grooves that most drummers never touch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a drum set to start lessons?
Not at all. We can begin with just sticks and a practice pad. This is perfect for anyone checking out drumming for the first time— and when you’re ready to level up, we’ll help you find affordable gear.
At what age can kids start learning the drums?
The earlier kids start learning the drums the better. Kids minds are in a high development at younger ages, and they absorb information very quickly. Starting drum lessons at an early age can increase focus and coordination. At The Xgroove we teach kids as young as 6 years old.
Am I too old to learn the drums?
You are never too old to learn the drums. No matter what age you are, learning how to play the drums can lift your spirit and enlighten your soul. It teaches your brain to keep learning and growing and will inspire you to take on new challenges. In fact, our drum teacher Chad Peters started playing at a later age of 17.
Am I too uncoordinated to play the drums?
With our easy-to-understand lesson plan, our drum teacher will break down the drum parts into very simple coordination. Once you understand the individual parts of the drumbeat, you will then gradually piece it together and play a full drumbeat. In your free trial drum lesson, you will learn how to play a basic drumbeat.
