About Our Drum Lessons

Beginner Drum Lessons

Our drum lessons for beginners begin with a simple understanding of how a drumbeat is put together. You will learn how to read and play simple drumbeats and you will learn what a drum fill is and when to play it.

We start with 8th note rock beats. Beats that are very common and played in almost any song you’ve ever heard. We start with adding the bass drum in different positions of the drumbeat. Then from there we progress into adding extra snare hits to add emphasis to the beat.

As you progress through the beginner drumbeats you will start to learn about playing the snare drum and how to develop more rhythm. We go from very simple snare drum rhythms to a slightly more complex strings of rhythms. What’s best about this part of our drum lessons is that the snare drum rhythms can used for drum fills as well.

In the second half of our drum lessons for beginners you will start to add more variation to the drumbeat, like splashing the hi-hat. This simple concept falls right in line with the beats you already know how to play.

Beyond splashing the hi-hat, you begin leaning into intermediate concepts. Moving from playing the bass drum in 8th note positions to tighter 16th note positions. As well as playing the snare drum in 16th note positions. This is when your groove starts to come alive.

Intermediate:

At the beginning of our intermediate drum lessons, you learn how to play with dynamics (ghost notes). Ghost notes are very soft hits on the snare drum and give the drumbeat more depth. This is easily applied to the drumbeats that you know from our beginner drumbeats.

Next up, is displacing the backbeat. This is where you start to give your drumbeats a different push and pull. Extending or shortening the length between the other backbeats in the groove. This added with ghost notes adds a funk feel to your drumbeats.

Continuing on with the snare drum rhythms, you will learn about rudiments. Rudiments are a specific list of rhythms and sticking patterns that are used in all aspects of drumming. Like, the paradiddle. These rudiments will enhance rhythm and creativity around the drums.

At this point in you intermediate drum lessons, you start to play drumbeats with all 4 limbs. A technique called hi-hat stepping. This concept adds a tighter snap to your drumbeats and can be used to accent the quarter notes or 8th notes. This is where your independence on the drum begins.

And, with the development of 4-way coordination, you will begin to learn about double bass concepts. Double bass drumming is an exhilarating style of drumming and with the rhythm concepts that you learned from snare drumming you will play them on the bass drums creating powerful grooves.

Advanced Drum Lessons:

Advanced drum lessons at The Xgroove starts with taking your independence to a higher level. Jumping right into drumming styles like Samba and Baiao. These two drum styles rely on playing a repetitive pattern on the feet (ostinato) while you play combinations of rhythms with your hands. Instantly building your independence on the drums.

Using the rudiments that you already know how to play you will start to use them in your groove playing to create deeper rhythms between the snare drum and hi-hat. And you will learn to apply the rudiments to the toms for stylish drum fills.

As you progress through learning about ostinato drumming and applying rudiments around the drum set, we then start to take you double bass to the next level with more advanced rhythms. You'll learn to play variations of single stroke rolls like the 5-stroke roll and the 6-stroke roll to create double bass patterns that groove.

And at the higher end of advanced drum lessons, you will learn more complex patterns with the feet. You learn about using 3 pedals to create unique drum grooves and then as you progress with this concept you will learn about 4 pedal drumming.
